Black tie
Black tie is a uniform. Wear it like one.
A dinner jacket has rules — and inside those rules, a bespoke one fits like nothing rented ever will. Midnight blue or ivory, grosgrain or satin, trousers that sit at the waist where they belong. Measured at your office or home, anywhere in Tampa Bay.
Why own one
Rent it twice and you’ve paid for half of one.
Tampa runs on galas — hospital foundations, the performing arts center, firm holiday parties, charity season from October through April. If black tie appears on your calendar even twice a year, a rented tuxedo is the most expensive thing you can wear.
A bespoke dinner jacket is cut once, to your shoulders and your waist, and holds its own for twenty years of invitations. True black barathea or midnight blue — which reads blacker than black under evening light — with facings in grosgrain or satin, one button, jetted pockets, no vents or side vents as your build favors.
For outdoor and warm-season black tie, an ivory dinner jacket over black trousers is the classic Gulf answer, and one almost nobody rents well.
The details
Done to the letter.
Barathea & mohair
Black barathea is the standard. A touch of mohair adds the sheen and crispness evening light rewards, and breathes better in a Florida ballroom.
Grosgrain or satin
Shawl collar or peak lapel, faced in ribbed grosgrain or smooth satin, matched to the braid down the trouser seam.
Cut for suspenders
High enough to sit at the natural waist under a cummerbund or waistcoat, with side adjusters or suspender buttons. No belt loops — black tie never has them.
Marcella & studs
A proper evening shirt with a marcella bib and stud holes, cut to your collar like everything else here.
The Measure of Distinction
Book before the season does.
Gala season books the bench from October through April. A first tuxedo wants ten to twelve weeks — count back from the invitation.
